Can You Put a Waterproof Trench Coat in the Dryer? Safe Heat Activation & Seam Care FAQs
A waterproof trench coat should not go in a hot dryer. The listed care for the Spring Jacket Waterproof Hooded Trench Coat is a 30°C gentle wash and hang drying in a shaded area, with direct high-heat drying avoided so water-repellent properties and sealed seams last. Heat activation is not a listed step for this coat. If an optional care product such as Nikwax later specifies a low-heat cycle, follow that product's label for that product only, still treating the coat's default as hang dry.
Hang dry is the seam-safe answer
Sealed seams are glued or taped barriers along stitching. High heat can stress those bonds and the 100% polyester shell. A hot tumble also hits snap-button cuffs, zipper tape, and the cinch hardware. None of that is improved by 'just a short cycle.'
Hang the 350g coat on a hanger from the shoulders, hood laying flat, away from a radiator and away from hard noon sun on a pale color. Shade is listed for a reason. Shape the hem and waist with a hand so the trench dries in the outline it will be worn in.

Heat activation is not a default setting on this coat

Some aftermarket water-repellent restorers instruct a low-heat tumble after their treatment. That is their label, not a hidden feature of every waterproof trench. This coat's listed dry is hang dry in shade. Do not invent a heat-activation ritual with an empty dryer.
Nikwax is listed as a care-product brand. It is optional. If that product is used later, read that bottle for temperature and whether a dryer is even allowed. Do not mix that instruction with bleach, fabric softener, or a hotel hot cycle 'to be sure.'
UPF 50+ that blocks 98% of UV lives in the fabric. A hot dryer is still a bad idea for color, hand, and coatings even though UPF is not a lotion that bakes on.
What to do instead of the dryer after a soak
After rain, hang the coat open so the mesh lining (5,000 g/m² listed) can dry. After a wash, the same hang. Do not fold it into its own pocket until it is fully dry. A packed-damp trench is how musty storage starts, which then tempts another wash and another bad dryer idea.
Towel-blot the hem if it is dripping, without twisting sealed seams. Keep zippers closed so they dry in the right shape. Snap cuffs in the position they are usually worn.
Hotel dryers are often hotter than a home low setting and have no reliable temperature. Skip them. A shower rail in a ventilated bathroom beats a mystery tumble.
Heat options after washing a waterproof trench
| Method | Fits this coat | Risk | | --- | --- | --- | | Hang dry in shade | Listed care | Low if the hang is shaped | | Hot dryer | No | Seams, coating, hardware | | Radiator or direct sun bake | No | Heat and color fade | | Low heat only because a care-product label requires it | Only if that bottle says so | Ignoring the bottle or overheating | | Pack into pocket while damp | No | Odor and extra washing |

- [ ] Wash at 30°C on gentle when the coat is soiled.

- [ ] Keep sealed seams untwisted; do not wring.

- [ ] Follow a Nikwax or similar label only when that product is actually used.
- [ ] Pocket-fold only after the lining and shell are dry.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put a waterproof trench coat in the dryer?
Not on high heat. Hang dry in shade is the listed method. A hot dryer can stress sealed seams and coatings.
Will a short low-heat tumble 'reactivate' the coating?
That is not a listed care step for this coat. Some optional restorers mention heat on their own labels. Default remains hang dry.
What if the lining is still damp at the hem?
Keep hanging. Blot, do not wring. Mesh lining holds water longer than the shell. Do not pocket-pack until both sides feel dry.
Can a dryer shrink a 350g polyester trench?
High heat can change the hand and stress construction even when fiber is polyester. There is no benefit that is worth that risk.
Is a dryer safe after using a care product?
Only if that product's label says so, at the temperature it names. Nikwax is an optional brand, not a command to tumble every wash.

What to do next
If the coat has been hot-tumbled, stop. Wash at 30°C only when needed, hang it in shade, and wait until the mesh lining is dry before folding it into its pocket. Treat any later care product as its own label, not as permission to run a hotel dryer on hot.
