Tech Wash vs. Regular Detergent: What Should You Use on Technical Rainwear?

Why detergent residue is the whole problem
Ordinary laundry detergent works by leaving your clothes slightly water-loving. That is not a defect; it is the design. Surfactants break the surface tension of water so it can carry dirt away, and a small amount of that surfactant stays in the fabric after rinsing. On a cotton shirt this is invisible and harmless.
On a waterproof shell, it is the opposite of what you want. The outer face of a rain coat is supposed to make water bead up and roll off.
